Harrington Discovery Institute names Li Lan a Scholar-Innovator
The Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals placed Dr. Li Lan in its 2022 class of Harrington Scholar-Innovators. Eleven physician-scientists entered that class. Dr. Lan led her lab at Massachusetts General Hospital at the time.
The award backs the project Targeting mRNA Methyltransferase in Cancer. A Scholar-Innovator can draw up to 1.1 million dollars over the term, and the institute adds its own guidance on drug development. The scholar and the home institution keep the intellectual property.
The project grew out of the RNA-dependent DNA repair pathway that the lab described. It asks a direct question: can a drug against that pathway make a resistant tumor answer to treatment again?
